Personal spending habits
the cost of living in the netherlands is slightly higher than back home if currency exchange is taken into consideration. traveling was an equally important experience of studying abroad in in relation to the amount of traveling done and the places visited, travel expenses seem to be less. eficient transportation systems and access to many european countries and cities naturally added to this perception.

if you enjoy drinking, start at your place with some friends. alcohol proves to be extremely expensive in the pubs and bars.

Personal comments
the language of instruction was english although local students were instructed in their native tongue. i was at ease with the local language as i speak afrikaans, a derivative from primitive dutch. most of the words currently used in dutch are the same as in afrikaans, so communication was not a problem at all. it proved, however, to be equally difficult to get a proper grasp of the language as i am accustomed to grammar used in afrikaans.

I wish I had known...
i wish i had known more about what i could expect. i was totally surprised upon arrival here, and i could have been better prepared if i had a bit more knowledge about the local life. it was an unforgettable, life enriching experience, nonetheless.

Personal recommendation
i would recommend this university to students who are eager and who posesses drive and ambition. it is also important to mention that independent thinking proves to be a requirement to achieve success here as many issues will require your ability to make things happen for yourself.

Final comments
plan carefully what exactly you hope to achieve from your study abroad... and stick to your plan!!! if you come from outside europe, try to visit as many places possible. if its your first travel experience away from home, be prepared to experience some sadness and loneliness, and learn to rely on those close to you... they will experience the same feelings. lastly, have loads of fun!!!!!

Academic
Course recommendations
the system could be made more proficient, especially in relation to teaching methods. coming from a university that has a slightly different teaching strategy i would say that the length of periods could be adjusted too.

access to resources could be upgraded, especially with reference to internet access. academic life was interesting though, with teachers being available for consultation, or just general discussion in most cases.

there are many bars and cafes in the city. thursdays are regarded as student nights and many parties takes place. there is much to see in neighboring cities and towns, probably due to the close proximity and efficient transportation systems.

Housing
Type of housing: A room exchange
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: A room exchange
Why?
aside from the satisfactory conditions mentioned above, living with other students proved to be an educational experience in itself, as relating to personal growth and life.

accommodation options varied between room exchange and apartment houses. both types of facilities proved to be quite favourable, with advantages and disadvantages in both. students were allocated to accommodation types without choice or request though. overall, it was a pleasant experience though.
